On Friday night in Humble, the Dayton Broncos finished up the 2020 football season with a 45-6 loss to Kingwood Park at Turner Stadium in district 12-5A-II play. Dayton jumped out in front and then could not score the rest of the way as the Panthers finished the game by scoring the final 45-points. The Broncos jumped out quickly, with quarterback Blayne Denton finding Donovan Orebo on a 32-yard scoring strike to give Dayton a 6-o lead with 10:23 left in the first quarter. Kingwood Park then responded with a Juan Garcia 4-yard run, and after the Anthony Sterner PAT, the home team led 7-6. The score stayed the same until the second quarter when the Panthers increased their lead on a Hudson Dezell to Cavan Adrian’s 17-yard strike to make it 14-6. Kingwood Park then made it 21-6 with 1:15 left in the first half as Code Brady scored from 6-yards out. The Panthers were not done as Sterner booted a 40-yard field goal with no time remaining in the first half, and the advantage was 24-6 at the break. Dezell then put the game away with a couple of touchdown passes in the third quarter, with the first one coming at the 4:49 mark of the quarter and an 18-yard strike to Adrian and a 31-6 lead. With just 55 seconds left in the quarter, it was Dezell hooking up with Patrick Overmyer from 17-yards out, and the score was 38-6. Garcia rounded out the scoring for Kingwood Park early in the fourth quarter by running in from the i-yard line. Dayton finished the game with 354-yards of total offense. Denton passed for 200-yards on 15 of 29 attempts, while Orebo caught six-passes for 104 yards. Kameron George added two receptions for 45-yards while Daveon Washington rushed for 107-yards on 19 totes.

However, with everything changing by the minute, Liberty Head Coach Jason Wickliff had to find a new opponent quickly, and that was Class 5-A La Porte, and the Bulldogs came to town and took care of the Panthers in a 90-57 win. La Porte was hot from the outside and finished the game with 14 three-pointers. Liberty jumped out to a quick 4-2 advantage a couple of minutes in with a trey by Kaden Nolan. Tied at 5-apiece, the Bulldogs started to get it going from downtown and after back-to-back three-pointers that would give the visitors an n-5 advantage with 5:17 left in the first quarter. La Porte kept it going, and after an 11-0 run that saw them lead 16-5, the Panthers Kieron Joiner scored on a drive to stop the run. Down 22-9, Nolan nailed a trey just before the first horn sounded to get Lib-erty within 22-12 after one. The Bulldogs built the lead to 32-17 before a nice drive and bucket by D.J. Harris made it 32-19 midway through the second period. La Porte then ended the quarter on a 143 run to lead 46-26 at the half. Nolan had 8 of his team-high 13-points at the break. The second halfwas much of the same, and the Bulldogs finished the third quarter leading 69-43 after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, Joiner did have a nice finish as he grabbed the rebound on one end and went the length of the court for the bucket, which made the score 81-51 at the time. Joiner finished with 12 points while Vincent Harris also finished in double figures with ii. Patrick Flowers chipped in with 8. Liberty travels to Woodville on Friday night.

Leading the way for Head Coach Karen Slack’s bunch was senior Kennedy Evans, named the District’s Defensive MVP. Skylar Nappier of Huffman was named the district’s MVP, while teammate Brenna Jones finished as the Offensive MVP. Liberty had Abbie Knepper and Katrina Tran named as first team selections, while Kylie Bishop and Morgan Vaughn were named to the second team. Honorable Mention picks for the Lady Panthers were Madyson Goudeau and Emalee Villarreal.

Named as the district’s MVP was sophomore Josie Rollins. Junior Makinnley Smart was named the district’s Middle Hitter MVP. Very deserving and once again being named the Coach of the Year was Regina Snell. Tarkington, who also advanced to the post-season, grabbed a couple of top honors on the list. McKensie Doolittle was named the Defensive MVP, while teammate Sydney Whitmire finished as the MVP setter. Landing on the first team for Hardin was Georgia Vance and Kylee Land. Making the second team was Maddy Fregia and Haven Crump, while Rory Perez and Julianna Smart were Honorable Mention selections. The Lady Longhorns also had a pair of players make the first team in Georgia Weeks and Emily Lowe, while Savannah Boyd was named to the second team. Troy Errington is the head coach for Tarkington.

Read moreBarbers Hill quarterback Brent Holdren accounted for all six touchdowns, with four of those being on the ground to lead the Eagles to a 42-6 win over the Dayton Broncos on Friday afternoon in District 12-5A-II action at Houston Methodist Field at Bronco Stadium. The game featured a twohour weather delay as bad weather moved in over Dayton right at halftime. The win clinched a playoff spot for Barbers Hill. The Eagles jumped out early as the defense forced an interception, with Theron Pierre stepping in front of a Bronco pass and setting the offense up at the 45- yard line. Seven plays later, it was Holdren scoring from 3-yards out to give his team a 7-0 lead. Dayton’s next offensive series saw the Broncos forced to punt, and after a 6-yard punt, Barbers Hill was at the Dayton 30-yard line. A couple of plays later, it was Holdren connecting with Canden Grogan for a 22-yard score the Eagles led 14-0 with 6:40 left in the opening quarter. The Broncos did get a big play on their next offensive possession as quarterback Blayne Denton laid out a beautiful pass to Cameron Cooper, who raced 69-yards down to the Barbers Hill 29-yard line. Dayton could not get anything out of it, though, as they turned the ball over on downs. The Broncos did have fumble recoveries by Jaxon Day and Esteban Vega in the first half. After the long halftime delay, the Eagles wasted little time extending their advantage, with Holdren motoring 51-yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 just a minute into the second half. Dayton responded with a nice 75-yard 10-play drive capped off with a Denton to Kameron George 13-yard score to get the Broncos within 21-6 at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter. Barbers Hill got the score back a couple of minutes later, with Holdren scoring on a 22-yard keeper to make it 28-6 with 4:33 left in the third. On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Eagles put the game away, with Holdren doing it again on the ground on a 7-yard score and the advantage was 35-6 with 11:53 left. The final Barbers Hill touchdown came on a Holdren to Andrew Galvan 54-yard score with 8:09 left on the clock. Denton finished the game with 213-yards passing, and George caught six passes for 40-yards. Davin Lee added 4-receptions for 70-yards. Dayton will close out the 2020 season on Friday night in Humble against Kingwood Park.

Vincent Harris was on fire from the outside for the Panthers with five three-pointers and finished with 17 points. In JV play it was Liberty also winning with a 42-39 victory over the Bulldogs. The Panthers return to action on Friday when they welcome Hull-Daisetta. Game time is set for around 6 p.m. Liberty is preselling tickets to all home games. Home side is allowed 250 tickets and visitor side is allowed 250 tickets. Social Distancing will be observed. Masks must be worn by all persons 10 and older at all times unless eating or drinking.
