The Dayton Broncos went toe-to-toe with first place Kingwood Park on Wednesday night at home and played with the Panthers the whole way but fell just a little short at the end in a 48-40 loss in district action. Dayton grabbed an early 5-3 advantage thanks to a three-pointer by Gilbert Sanchez. Later in the opening period. Landon Baldwin had a nice drive and score to make it 10-9. Kingwood Park scored just before the end of the quarter to lead n-10 after one. The lead vanished early in the second quarter with Brice Payton scoring from downtown, and the Broncos moved back in front13-n. The Broncos then took their biggest lead of the game a few minutes later, with Sanchez hitting again from downtown, and the advantage was up to 21-14 with 5:05 left in the first half. The Panthers then dominated the rest of the period and finished the half on an 11-1 run to lead 25-22 at the intermission. Kingwood Park continued their run and started the third quarter on a 7-0 run to build their lead to 32-22 before a three-pointer by Baldwin stopped the run and moved Dayton within 32-25. The Panthers built their lead to 40-29 midway through the final period, and then a bucket by Baldwin made it 40-31. On the next Bronco trip down the court, it was Tanner Boufford pulling up for a jumper, and Dayton was within 40-33 with 2:45 left in the game. After a Kingwood Park score, Payton scored on a three-point play to make it 42-36. That would be the closed the Broncos would get the rest of the way as the Panthers hit some free throws to secure the win. Baldwin led Dayton with 13 points and Payton added 8. The Broncos will close out their season next Saturday at home against Lake Creek.

Jaime Lopez assisted on two of the goals. Liberty jumped in front at the 7th minute, with Ruiz putting it away on an assist from Ricardo Garcia to make it a 1-0 lead. Two-minutes later, it was the Panthers at it again with Garcia on the other end, this time with the goal and Lopez assisting for a 2-0 advantage. Alberto Diaz and Daniel Vargas had good looks later in the half for Liberty, and then in the 38th minute, the Panthers would find the nets again, with Ruiz scoring on a nice corner kick assist from Abdiel Garcia to make it 3-0 at the half. Liberty’s final score of the night came on another corner kick. This one came in the 56th minute with Hector Lira scoring with the assist going to Lopez for the 4-0 final score. The Panthers will host East Chambers on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Playing against one of the playoff teams coming out of District 12-5A on Saturday afternoon in the final game for Dayton, the Lady Broncos led after a quarter but then went cold from the field and New Caney took advantage of that in a 45-27 win at Dayton. Early on, things looked good for the Lady Broncos as Allie Davis nailed a three-pointer from about 30-feet for a 3-0 lead.

On Wednesday night, Dayton traveled to Montgomery and knocked off the Lady Bears 50-40. Amber Kelly poured in 19 points to lead the way, with Allie Davis adding 17. The Lady Broncos then played Caney Creek at home on Saturday afternoon for senior day and had their way with the Lady Panthers 51-3o. Kelly once again led the way in scoring with 17. Dayton will host New Caney on Saturday afternoon in the last district contest.

Both teams traded leads in the first half, and a three-pointer by Antonio Wheeler just before the close of the first half would give the Indians the lead at the break 25-24. Things stayed close in the second half, and Cleveland only trailed 46-41 heading into the fourth quarter, and then New Caney would go on a 8-o run to push their advantage to 54-41 and that would ice the game away. Devontae Robertson led the Indians in scoring with 15, while Johnny Hines added 13. Samuel Brandon led the Eagles with 20 points. Cleveland is now 6-12 on the season and 5-5 in district play.

Hardin grabbed a big firsthalf lead and never looked back as they knocked off the Ladyhorns 58-41 in a district tilt. Maddy Fregia was on fire early on for the Lady Hornets as she scored on a drive and then drained a triple to make it a 7-3 advantage. Tarkington then cut the deficit to 7-5 on an Emily Lowe steal and score. Hardin then ended the opening period on an 8-2 run capped off by a full length of the court pass from Fregia to Madison Boston, who scored on a lay-up, and the advantage was 15-7 after a quarter of play. Fregia then connected on another three-pointer early in the second period, and the lead was 20-8. Brianna Boddie then answered for the Ladyhorns with a bucket as she was fouled to get within 20-10. Georgia Vance then grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, and then a jumper by Reese Parker had the advantage out to 32-16 late in the first half. Down 34-16 at the break, Lowe scored the first six points of the third quarter for Tarkington, and that helped the visitors get within 35-22. Lindsey Tinner then scored a couple of buckets for Hardin to get the lead back to 42-28. Emmah Hebert then came off the bench and nailed a couple of big three-pointers and the advantage was up to 47-29. The Ladyhorns made one last run led by Lowe, who stroked a three-pointer to get her team within 51-39 before the sophomore fouled out with 2:54 remaining in the game. The Lady Hornets then ended the contest on a 7-2 run to secure the victory. Lowe scored a gamehigh 24 points to lead Tarkington, while Boddie added 10. Hardin was led by Tinney, who scored 14 points and Fregia with 13.
