Dr. Luke Chachere had the program and gave the Rotarians a glimpse of Dayton History. He brought the story of his father, Mr. L. J. Chachere to the club. Luther Joseph (L.J.) Chachere was born in Orchard, Tx in 1932 where he grew up and graduated from Orchard High School in 1950. He graduated from Sam Houston State University with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1954. L.J. moved to Dayton after getting his Masters in 1955 as a vocational agriculture teacher at Dayton High School. He married Jonnie Lea Belt in 1957 and together they raised five children (Luke, Rob, Matt, Jeff, and Nanette). He founded the Dayton Young Farmers Chapter in 1959. He was awarded the Area IX Outstanding Young Farmer and received the Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree and the Honorary American Farmer Degree. In 1963, Chachere founded the Chachere Feed Store. In addition to being a feed dealer, he was a rancher and hay producer. Although his career took his life in another direction from being an AG teacher, his commitment to Dayton ISD and his community did not stop. L.J. served on the DISD Board of Trustees from 1976-1991. In 2004, Mr. Chachere was a recipient of the Dayton ISD’s Wall of Fame. The Dayton FFA Livestock Show dedicated the 2016 show to Mr. Chcachere.

The Trivium Club met on May 10 at the home of Ange Payne, with hostess duties shared by Misty Riley and Amy Milentz. Members enjoyed the annual salad and dessert social for the final meeting of the club year.

The Dayton Rotary Club listened to a very interesting program this past week. The Bridgehaven Team of Paula Torres and Shelley Quigley presented the program specifically discussing Liberty County statistics and program. Liberty County had 1,263 intakes while Chamber County had 366 intakes. They have two dedicated staff to just read intakes. The ladies also discussed the various services that are provided by Bridgehaven which include: Court Advocacy, Case Information, Rainbow Room, Referrals and Follow-Ups. Bridgehaven also has six different interviewers that meet with children and the training to become an interviewer is very intense. The Forensic interviews that are conducted can be broken down into different types of abuse. These are sexual abuse (172), physical abuse (78), child witness (62), child at risk (138), neglectful supervision (38) and emotional abuse (4). They also discussed the breakdown of the demographics of the children- White (208), Hispanic (161), African-American (29), Bi-racial (12) and Other (16). When it comes to the ages of children that they work with, Bridgehaven’s statistics shows that there were 74 children in the age bracket of 0-5 years, 206 students between the ages 6-12, 144 children between the ages of 13-17 and 2 that were 18 or older. Sadly, it was reported that the majority of the alleged perpetrator’s relationships come from either a parent or a stepparent. The Dayton Rotary Club praised Torres and Quigley for the work that they do for our children and our community.

Every Tuesday morning at ten o’clock a talented group of ladies meets at the Liberty Municipal Library for an hour or two of camaraderie and creativity as they take up their handcrafts and visit. The Lost Arts Club, as the group is called, has been in existence for over a decade, and several of the members have been part of the club since its inception.
