The Dayton Broncos play in District 12-5A-DII and the playoff representatives of the district had a good opening weekend as three of the four teams collected wins against District 11-5A-DII. The Crosby Cougars won in convincing fashion at home against Willowridge 66-0 while the Nederland Bulldogs shutout Houston Sterling 37-0 also at home on Thursday night. The Port Neches-Groves Indians played against state-ranked Fort Bend Marshall and played tough but fell 21-14 as Indians quarterback Blake Bost had both touchdown runs. On Friday night at Galena Park ISD Stadium it was the Barbers Hill Eagles having their way with the Yellow Jackets 51-14. Barbers Hill quarterback Brent Holdren had three touchdown passes and added another on the ground as the Eagles led 44-6 after three quarters. All three teams will move on to the Area Championships as Crosby will face Texarkana next Friday night at SFA in Nacogdoches while Barbers Hill plays the Huntsville Hornets on Friday night at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah while Nederland plays on Saturday afternoon against Longview Pine Tree in Nacogdoches.

Three Dayton players finished in double figures, with Jerrica Keener leading the way with 20 points. Amber Kelly added 14, while Kyra Keener chipped in with 10 points. The JV team fell to Porter 51-32 while the freshman also fell to the Lady Spartans 47-17. The Lady Broncos are now 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in district play. Dayton will visit Cleveland on Friday night.
Read moreThe Hardin Hornets had a split on the week as on Tuesday night as they lost on a buzzer-beater at Deweyville 45-44. Hardin led 22-15 at the half but saw Deweyville outscore the Hornets 10-4 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 26-25, heading into the final quarter of play. The final eight minutes was very low scoring, but it was a three-pointer by the Pirates at the end that landed them the win. Colby Barrett led the way with 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Landen Taylor added 10 points and Carson Williams chipped in with 10 points and 6 boards. Hardin then got back on their winning ways at home on Friday night with a nice 63-51 victory over Warren. After both teams were deadlocked at 14-apiece after the first quarter of play, the Hornets opened up a 33-23 halftime advantage after winning the second quarter 19-9. Hardin continued to open the lead after a 15-9 third quarter and led by 16 heading into the fourth period. Taylor led the Hornets in scoring with 20 points with four three-pointers. Williams added 17 points and hauled in 15 rebounds, while Caden Elmore added 8 points and 12 rebounds. Hardin is now 6-3 on the season and will start district play on Friday at home against Trinity.
Read moreThe Tarkington Longhorns have a very disciplined and senior oriented team and on Tuesday night at home in non-district action against Liberty, it paid off as Tarkington knocked off the Panthers 44-31. The Longhorns grabbed an early 6-2 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Braden Bostwick with an assist from Blake Ellington. The Panthers closed within 6-4 on a pull-up jumper by Marco Garcia with 2:55 left in the first quarter. Down 9-4, Liberty’s Patrick Flowers connected from downtown and the deficit was down to 9-7. Early in the second period, Tarkington upped the lead to 14-9 thanks to a trey by Trae Deck. The Longhorns lead moved to 17-9 as post Carlos Preciado scored and was fouled for a threepoint play the old fashioned way. The Panthers answered with a Kaden Nolan triple to make it a 17-12 game. Deck then converted a three-point play opportunity, and the lead was back to 24-15 at the half. Early in the third period, the Longhorns extended their lead to double digits with Blake Ellington grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring and then a steal and bucket by Bryce Ellington to make it a 30-19 advantage with 4:47 left in the third quarter which also forced a Liberty timeout. Down 33-19, Flowers connected on a three-pointer to get the Panthers within 33- 22. Back came Tarkington with Preciado scoring on a three-point play to make it 36-24. The Longhorns led 43-26 after three quarters of play. The fourth quarter was very low scoring and featured only six-points combined. Nolan nailed a three-pointer to get Liberty within 44-31 but that would be the final score as neither team scored the rest of the way. Preciado scored 11 points to lead Tarkington in scoring while Deck finished with 10. Blake Ellington chipped in with 7. The Panthers were led by Nolan with 8 points and Flowers and Devin Fregia each finished with 6 points apiece. Liberty will host Huffman on Friday while the Longhorns welcome in New Waverly.
Read moreThe Dayton Lady Broncos soccer team will hit the pitch for real on January 2 to kick off the 2021 season at home against Liberty with a noon start. Dayton has a scrimmage against La Porte on December 18 at home. The Lady Broncos will stay at home for a Highway 90 contest with the Crosby Lady Cougars on January 5. That weekend, Dayton will play at the La Porte Tournament. District play will start on January 26 in New Caney at Porter high school. The regular season will end on March 12 at New Caney. The Lady Broncos are coached by Ronnie Simicek.
Read moreThe Hardin Lady Hornets received a good team effort on Tuesday night in Saratoga to ease past the West Hardin Lady Oilers 5431 in non-district action. Hardin used a big opening quarter in which they put up 14-points while allowing just four to West Hardin in taking a double-digit advantage. The second quarter was also a good one for the Lady Hornets as they outscored the Lady Oilers 18-n in the period to lead 32-15 at the break. The third quarter was pretty even, with Hardin winning the period by one to lead 44-26 after three. Hardin then doubled up West Hardin 10-5 in the final eight minutes to take the win. Madison Boston was the leading scorer with13 while Haven Crump hauled in 10 rebounds. Rebekah Hebert dished out 6 assists. “The girls played smart ball. They were aggressive on defense and made smart decisions.,” said Lady Hornets Head Coach Zachary Arthur. “It was definitely a team effort, had key plays and players came off the bench last night to help out’ The Lady Hornets will host Coldspring on Friday evening.
Read moreThe Hull-Daisetta Lady Cats used their full-court press in the first half to grab a big first-half lead and then cruised in the second half to a 59-27 win over the Kountze Lady Lions on Tuesday night at home. The Lady Cats used seven first-quarter points by Vaquaylon Hoskins to lead 22-7 after one period of play. The second and third quarters were also friendly for Hull-Daisetta as they held Kountze to just nine-points combined in the periods while putting up 24 themselves and leading big 48-16 heading into the fourth quarter. Hoskins led the way in scoring with 15, while Kaylei Armstrong finished with 12. Chloe Seller also finished in double figures with 10. Samantha Rose and Kaidyn Smith each added eight points apiece. The Lady Cats will travel to Madisonville on Friday.
Read moreThe Hardin Hornets put the defensive clamps on Sabine Pass at home on Tuesday night, and that was key in a 39-36 win over the Sharks. Carson Williams led Hardin with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Sabine Pass jumped out early and led 11-7 after the opening period before the Hornets started getting tough on defense and held the Sharks to just four points in the second quarter and led 21-15 at the half. Hardin outscored Sabine Pass 11-10 in the third quarter to lead 32-25 heading into the final stanza. The Sharks held the Hornets to just seven points in the final eight minutes but could not overcome the Hardin lead as the Hornets improved their record to 5-1 on the season. Colby Barrett added 10 points, and 2 steals while Landon Taylor finished with 8 points. Hardin will host Warren on Friday night and then welcome in West Hardin the following day for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
