Jackson awarded Sheriff’s Association of Texas Scholarship

LIBERTY — At a special ceremony, Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader had the opportunity to award a special scholarship to someone near and dear to the LCSO’s heart.
The Sheriff’s Association of Texas has awarded a scholarship for the Spring 2024 Semester to Brian Jackson, a 2019 graduate of Tarkington High School and son of Shirley Jackson, Executive Secretary at the LCSO.
“As far as I go, I went back in the history of the Sherriff ’s Office, and I don’t know anybody whose received this scholarship, so you’re the very first one. You must’ve done something really special,” said Rader.
One of the requirements for the scholarship included writing a two-page essay about what the scholarship money would be going towards and how the recipient would spend it.
Jackson, currently a student at the University of Houston- Downtown, is working to obtain his bachelor’s degree in teaching with an ESL certification. He has been working hard towards his education and the scholarship as a straight-A student.
Jackson is majoring in Elementary Education and will be the first male teacher in his family.
“It’s a lot of hard work to become a teacher, lot of lesson planning, a lot of homework, a lot of reading, but with God, all things are possible,” Jackson said.
Rader was ecstatic and said that feeling of pride in Jackson extended across the entire sheriff ’s office.
When Jackson graduates from UHD, he plans to try to be a substitute teacher or paraprofessional to get his feet wet before becoming an actual teacher.
