More than 600 new laws signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott went into effect Sept. 1. The new state laws — including one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, the right to carry handguns both concealed and openly without a license, changes to election law and a bill allowing restaurants to sell alcohol to go — were passed during the regular session of the legislature, which ended May 31. The House and Senate adjourned their second special session Thursday night.

We continue to hold our friends in Louisiana in our prayers after Hurricane Ida made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane this week. Texas was proud to send a Chinook helicopter, 14 crew members, 30 fire engines, and 132 firefighters to aid in hurricane recovery efforts.

The Dayton High School Marine Corps JROTC has been awarded the distinction of Naval Honor School for the 2020-2021 school year. This is the 5th year in a row that Dayton High School MCJROTC has been recognized with this prestigious honor. This award places DHS in the top 20% of 257 MCJROTC schools across the country, and #4 in the region, which consists of 67 schools. For this award, schools are measured using a culmination of the following: community service hours, cadet extracurricular activities, scholarships and military enlistments, academic awards, public affairs events (Color Guards), drill, air rifle, physical fitness, and competitions.

For most people, senior year is all about making memories and having the time of their lives. Everyone looks forward to senior year and the final days they will spend with their childhood friends. There are many set traditions like football games and prom for students, but due to the pandemic and the restrictions it caused the last year, many schools are trying to think outside the proverbial box by starting new traditions to include many more students.
