Walking in the Sunshine

“Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night; and your God will be your glory”. (Isaiah 60: 1,19 While walking in the bright sunshine the other day and I noticed my shadow. When I walked away from the sun my shadow went before me, but when I walked toward the sun my shadow followed me.

My shadow was always there, but the direction I walked determined where it fell.

Think about how we all have our burdens and no matter what we do, believe, or think, they are there and tag along like shadows on a sunny day. But the direction in which we walk does make a difference. If we walk away from God, the source of all light, our burdens run before us. They darken our path and hide the fact that bright, radiant, life-giving sunshine abounds all around us. Now, if we walk toward God, our burdens follow, and our path is illuminated. Our burdens are not only behind us but everything looks bright.

Yes, we all have our burdens, but how they affect our lives is up to us and our relationship to God. With God we can put our burdens behind us if we walk toward Him. When we trust God with the unexplained, sunshine floods our minds, our souls, and our faces, too.

There’s nothing like bright sunshine to chase away clouds of weariness and anxiety. Soaking up the sun’s warmth and light can restore serenity faster than any potion or self-help advice. And if refl ections of those rays are winking off gentle waves in a calm breeze, so much the better.

Heavens declare, and skies proclaim, day after day and night after night. The sun, like a joyful celestial runner, sets out in hope and rests in victory. All of creation testifies to the glory and splendor of God.

The psalmist goes on to remind us that the Creator of the world is the Creator of the Word, that just as the sun’s light benefits all of natural life, God’s perfect law enhances the lives of God’s people.

Yet the glory of the Creator and the love of the Redeemer mean little if they are not equally displayed on the horizon of our lives. A life that rejoices in God’s sovereignty and delights in God’s beauty; a life that knows what is right, true, and just and isn’t afraid to name it; and a life that kneels before its maker and owner and lays its thoughts and words before God as a sacrifice of praise: this is the life our Creator calls us to consider. Let us walk in sunshine always.
