Liberty County expected to take over Dayton dump

DAYTON – City leaders came one step closer to relinquishing control of the Citizen Collection Station off FM 1413 to Liberty County.

The city council voted Monday night to accept an agreement between both entities to keep the doors open on the site that has served area residents since at least the 1970s.

Recently the facility that the city has operated announced that it would be closing Saturday, Dec. 31, but recent conversa- tions have led to a solution.

The county, which owns half of the facility, will take over operation on Jan. 1, 2023, and be responsible for employees, haul-off, and other liabilities.

Once the county takes over the site’s operations, there will be expanded hours and days of operations. The four other county dumps operate Wednesday-Saturday from 7 am – 5:30 pm. Those facilities are located in Tarkington, Rye, Hull, and Raywood.

Under the agreement, both entities will share the responsibility for costs associated with an environmental and procedural property audit.

Dayton will be expanding its operating hours to Monday from 8 am – 2 pm and Wednesday and Friday from 8 am – 5 pm until the end of the year.

Commissioner’s Court is expected to accept the agreement before the end of the year. The county will decide on pricing and official hours.
