James Ray Harris Sr., 1940-2019
James Ray Harris, Sr. was born in Liberty, Texas, on August 18, 1940. He grew up in Liberty, attending Liberty schools, and was in the graduating class of 1958. After high school, Jim served his country as a weather observer in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1963. After leaving the Air Force, most of his career was spent working in the chemical industry, first at Central International in Liberty, and later retiring from Syngenta Chemical in Channelview. After retirement, he moved back to Liberty from Crosby and spent many happy days playing golf at Magnolia Ridge Country Club.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Verda Mae Harris. He is survived by sons, James Harris and wife Patti of Austin, and Paul Harris and wife Suzanne of Cove, Texas; grandsons, Michael Wells and Preston Harris; great-granddaughter, Elisabeth Wells; and sister, Vanita Harris Vance and husband Bill of College Station.
Jim was lifetime resident of Liberty and surrounding areas, a member in good standing and past Master of Liberty Masonic Lodge 48, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 55 in Liberty.
A grave-side service will be held on July 27 at Cook Memorial Cemetery in Liberty, Texas at noon. The service will be followed by a celebration of life for the family and friends at Liberty Masonic Lodge No. 48 AF&AM. Finger food and refreshments will be provided, and covered dishes or deserts are welcomed. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
