Driving safely during the holidays

It is important to remain safe when driving, especially during the holiday season, when there is typically an increase in traffic as people travel to visit with loved ones.

"The combination of alcohol consumption and the increased volume of traffic due to holiday travel makes this time of year particularly dangerous on the roads," Chambers County Sheriff's Office Captain Bryan Baker said.

Law enforcement agencies nationwide, including Chambers County Sheriff's Office, see an increase in DUIs due to celebrations at Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, according to Baker.

Driving under the influence can pose serious risks to anyone on roadways.

Alcohol consumption impairs a driver's reaction time, judgement and coordination which can cause difficulty in navigating fluctuating road conditions or sudden road hazards.

Impairment increases the likelihood of accidents and consequences can be physical harm or legal, according to Baker.

"The most tragic outcomes are often injuries or fatalities, leaving families and communities grieving the loss of loved ones," Baker said. "Beyond the immediate physical danger, the emotional toll of harming or losing someone in a DUI-related crash is a burden that can last a lifetime."

Legal consequences for a DUI can include license suspension, substantial fines, or jail time. Baker noted a DUI conviction can have long-term effects on a person's reputation and livelihood.

Baker recommends designated drivers, ride-sharing services or others.

"Alternative transportation options can save lives and ensure that everyone makes it home safely to their families," Baker said.
