Sheriff's Office warns of dangerous TikTok trend
The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of an emerging dangerous TikTok trend in which participants kick the doors of residences.
Coined “Door-Kick Challenge,” some participants kick the door open, sometimes damaging the frame of the door. Others cause less physical damage while still causing alarm to residents.
“We have received word through social media that several instances have occurred within Chambers County at this time, but I am only aware of one instance being officially reported to us,” Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Bryan Baker said. “This is definitely not advisable and could lead to serious consequences or injury if things went too far or got out of hand.”
Participating in the trend can have legal consequences, including charges for criminal mischief if property is damaged. Furthermore, a criminal trespassing charge may be filed if the individual enters the residence even partially.
Many participants in the trend wear a mask to conceal their identity. Residents may mistake the trending actions for attempted burglary, which could result in defensive confrontation or physical harm to either party.
“Since many of these instances are caught on door surveillance cameras, a homeowner could see the subject approaching and feel they are about to be the victim of a much worse crime and decide to take action against the subject to protect their home and their own safety,” Baker said. “If a nearby neighbor sees someone wearing a mask running from a neighbor’s home as well, they may decide to take action thinking they are intercepting a crime that had just been committed.”
The office advises parents and guardians to speak with their children regarding the legal and physical risks of the trend.
“Property damage caused by kicking doors is costly to repair, and it creates unnecessary fear for residents, potentially leading to dangerous misunderstandings or confrontations,” according to a Chambers County Sheriff’s Office advisory.
The CCSO asks residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity in their area.
