Broncos' defense sharp in scrimmage against Falcons
DAYTON - After some hot summer workouts to start the 2023 season, the Dayton Broncos finally got a chance to face off against an opponent during the first scrimmage of the year last Friday night at Houston Methodist Field at Bronco Stadium against the Huffman Falcons.
The scrimmage started with both offenses running 10 plays against the other team’s defense. If a first down was not picked up after the third down, the ball was moved back to the offense’s 30-yard line.
Dayton and Huffman did three series of 10-plays each, with the only touchdown coming by the Broncos on a Hunter Wallace to Zach Breaux 70-yard touchdown.
After a five-minute break for both teams, the scrimmage went to one live 15-minute quarter.
Dayton had the first big play of the quarter as Denim Foster found Breaux on a nice 40-yard pass down to the Falcon’s 30-yard line. The Broncos could not find the end zone, but that would change on their next possession, with Wallace connecting against Breaux on a 72-yard touchdown with 9:24 remaining.
With the Dayton defense shutting the door on the Huffman offense, the Broncos would end the scrimmage with the night’s final point. Kicker Brayan Montes booted a 45-yard field goal with no time remaining.
The Broncos will stay home for their final scrimmage on Thursday night as they welcome in Goose Creek Memorial.
Dayton will then get their season going on Aug. 25 at home against New Caney Porter.
