K9 King Answers Final Call
Members of the Chambers County Sheriff's Office, alongside fellow K9s, lined the walkway into a veterinary clinic to honor K9 King as he answered his final call recently. King's handler, Deputy Hammas, walked side-by-side with his partner.
The CCSO gave K9 King, a German Shorthaired Pointer, a well-deserved send-off as he was brought to the Winnie Veterinary Clinic to be euthanized after battling an illness.
"He was a loyal partner and protector to his handler, Deputy Hammes, as well as a beloved friend to our community," Capt. Bryan Baker said. "He will always be remembered with respect, gratitude and a deep sense of loss."
King led an impressive career dedicated to serving Chambers County. The hardworking dog played an essential role as a single-purpose narcotics detection dog, primarily assisting in detection during traffic stops and in residences and buildings.
His ability to detect led to multiple seizures of narcotics, money and weaponry. His dedication led to about $1 million in narcotics money being seized.
King also participated in demonstrations at schools and other public events.
"His gentle, approachable nature made him a favorite at schools and public events, showing a side of law enforcement that fosters trust and connection," Baker said. "King's impact went beyond the call of duty. He brought people together and reminded us all of the power of service."
King began his career in March 2021 after being adopted from a military program following his graduation from K9 Global Academy. Hammas received his certification alongside King.
Once King retired due to age and health concerns, Hammas adopted him. King was retired for about four to five months before his health worsened.
"We usually give handlers the option to take them in since they're already kinda part of their family," Baker said.
King enjoyed head scratches and serving alongside his partner.
"King's memory will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those he served alongside," according to the Chambers County Sheriff's Office.
