WINNIE – An alleged copper thief was arrested after reportedly damaging “critical communication infrastructure” that caused disruptions to 911 services in Chambers and Jefferson counties.

“This type of reckless criminal behavior puts lives at risk,” said Chambers County Sheriff Brian C. Hawthorne.

According to the CCSO, Brad Thibodeaux was arrested in connection with vandalism, which resulted in extensive damages. The CCSO Special Investigations Unit responded to an investigation led by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, March 18.

The investigation focused on a copper theft in an area near Texas 73 and County Line Road in Winnie. According to the CCSO, the suspect appeared to have stolen copper wire and damaged a Windstream Communications fiber optic junction box.

The box was damaged after the suspect allegedly cut and damaged the fiber optic line, apparently believing the line contained copper wiring. Those actions reportedly caused an estimated $100,000 in physical damage and service disruptions.

“By cutting the fiber optic lines in his illegal hunt for copper, this individual not only caused significant financial loss but also endangered the public by disabling access to emergency services. Crimes that cripple critical infrastructure are serious crimes,” Hawthorne said.

Thibodeaux was arrested and booked in the Chambers County Jail for felony criminal mischief. More charges could be pending.

The CCSO is asking anyone with more information to call 409-267-2500.
