Late bucket lifts Lady Wildcats over Lady Panthers 42-41
LIBERTY- A big fourth quarter by the Splendora Lady Wildcats proved to be the difference on Friday night as the Lady Panthers fell 42-41 in a district contest.
Liberty led 35-29 entering the fourth quarter and 41-39 with just :11 seconds remaining as Splendora was fouled and went to the free throw line to shoot a pair of free throws. After making the first to make it a onepoint game, the second free throw was missed, but the Lady Wildcats grabbed the rebound and scored to give them a 42-41 advantage with :08 seconds left.
The Lady Panthers had one final shot at winning it, but the jumper was short, giving Splendora the win.
After leading 11-8 after a quarter of play, Madyson Goudeau nailed a three-pointer to make it 14-8. Goudeau then had a steal and score, and the advantage was 18-9. Later in the second period, it was Nailah Donatt o hitting the offensive boards and scoring, and the score was 20-14. Liberty led 22-18 at the half.
Morgan Vaughn made it a 28-24 advantage in the third quarter after scoring and getting fouled. Just before the end of the third quarter, Goudeau connected from downtown, and the Lady Panthers had built their advantage back up to 33-27.
Things then got tight in the final quarter of play as the Lady Wildcats got within 37-35 before Vaughn went to work on the offensive glass again and scored, and the lead was back to 39-35. Splendora then ended the game on a 7-2 run, pulling out the victory.
Goudeau finished with 12 points, while Tay Carry added 11. Vaughn and Raigan Valtierra each chipped in with 6 points apiece.
Liberty will travel to Hamshire- Fannett on Friday night.
