COLBERT STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE TO DANCING FOR OUR STARS

Colbert Elementary had a unique way of contributing to the upcoming Dancing For Our Stars event. The staff embarked on teaching their 3- and 4-year-olds soft skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and group work. They combined team building, fine arts, and family engagement all into their class projects. Each teacher and her class came up with an individual idea for their projects. The class projects ranged from artwork to a Jenga game to wind chimes. After collaborating, each child in the class had a part in making their projects. Principal Sonya Woodfork and her staff then hosted a family engagement night and the classes’ artworks were put into a silent auction. Parents were eager to bid and buy their child’s projects. Over $1200 was raised that night for the Lee College Foundation’s event Dancing For Our Stars, in which Superintendent Dr. Jessica Johnson is dancing and competing in. Principal Woodfork stated, “This was such a fun activity for our children. It also started the conversation with the district’s youngest students about going to college, scholarships, and introduced them to the importance of community service.” Both Dr. Johnson and the entire Colbert Staff were appreciative of the parents and their support for this worthy cause..
