Burleigh appointed interim police chief

A council chamber filled with Dayton Police Officers sat watching the Dayton City Council as they voted unanimously to appoint Lt. Shane Burleigh as the new interim police chief last week during a special called meeting. Burleigh was appointed on the last official day of outgoing chief Robert Vine, who is leaving to take on the role of Assistant City Manager in Paris, TX.
Burleigh began his career in law enforcement with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department in 1993 and has spent the last 15 with Dayton. He has worked in several areas while with Dayton, from patrol to narcotics, special crimes, and serving as lead investigator and spokesperson for the department.
Burleigh is excited about the opportunity and hopes to manage the department to the best of his ability while the city council decides what direction they want to head.
“I love the department and the people I work with, and I am happy to accept any assignment the council asks of me,’ said Burleigh.
Burleigh is married to Tammy Alexander, who serves the city as human resources director, and the couple has two sons, Terry and Ian.
As for Vine, he was recognized by the Dayton Community Development Corporation at the close of the meeting for his assistance with the organization.
Dayton Mayor Caroline Wadzeck also commented on how appreciative the city was of Vine.
“It’s been an honor to have you as our chief,” she said.
