Shorthanded H-D falls in 4th to Huntington
Playing shorthanded on Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Integra Winter Classic, the Hull-Daisetta Lady Cats almost pulled off the upset before the host Huntington Devilettes held on at the end for a 37-30 win.
Kaylei Armstrong scored 19 points for the Lady Cats, and Vaquaylon Haskins had 11. Huntington jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Armstrong nailed a three-pointer to make it 4-3. The Lady Devilettes then went on a modest 6-1 run to lead 10-4, and then Haskins found Armstrong, who nailed another trey, and the Lady Cats were down 10-7 after a quarter of play.
Early in the second quarter, Haskins scored from downtown to bring the deficit down to 12-10. Haskins nailed another three-pointer on the following trip down the court, and Hull-Daisetta led 13-12 with 3:30 left in the first half. The Lady Cats would lead 18-17 at the break.
After a quick bucket to start the third quarter by Huntington gave them the lead again at 19-18, Armstrong nailed another trey, and Hull-Daisetta was in the lead again at 21-19. The Lady Devilettes then went on a 9-0 run to lead 28-21.
The Lady Cats would not go away, and Haskins and Armstrong scored on back-to-back buckets, and the lead was down to 28-25. Huntington led 30-27 going into the fourth quarter and applied the defensive pressure on Hull-Daisetta as they held the Lady Cats to just three points in the final quarter to grab the seven-point win.
Hull-Daisetta will travel to Brookshire Royal for a Friday afternoon contest.
