Liberty Mayor honors LHS Literary Criticism
Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett proclaimed Tuesday, June 22, 2021, Liberty High School Literary Criticism Team Day during the Liberty City Council meeting. The team took the top prize in Literary Criticism at the 2021 Texas UIL State Academic Meet in Class 4A.
It is the 17th straight year that Liberty has qualified for the state meet, and Pickett professed that it must be a record, as he proudly boasted about the local students and their accomplishments.
“The City of Liberty is proud of you all. Be glad that you performed at this level,” said Pickett.
Students compete in a four-part contest that tests the competitors over literary topics like terms and history, with the sum of the top three members creating the team’s total score.
Longtime local educator and team coach Randy Gunter explained how the contest works to those in attendance at the meeting and bragged on the students.
“We are proud we had a year where we not only won an academic state championship, but an athletic state championship as well,” said Gunter.
Members of the team are Eve White, Wyatt Tulley, Jay Mealer, and Megan Farabee.
