The Texan Theater honored
Residents and officials from the community joined the Liberty County Historical Commission to honor the historical Texan Theater on Saturday. The theater dates back to 1933 and has been a mainstay of Cleveland ever since. The theater was purchased in 1994 by Cliff and Peggy Dunn, who held a grand reopening soon after. The first movie to show was Dumb and Dumber to a packed house. The Dunn family operated the theater as a family-owned business, with each member working countless hours in the theater. During the event, State Representative Ernest Bailes presented a resolution from the State of Texas honoring The Texan Theater, and Cleveland Mayor Richard Boyett presented a certificate of appreciation to the longest-tenured employee of the Texan Theater, Wesley Matlock. Liberty County Historical Commission Chair Linda Jamison presented current owner Clint Pendleton with a Historic Preservation and Community Cornerstone Business Certificate. After all of the speakers had honored the theater, the historical marker was unveiled by Tommy and Rebecca Dunn, children of the late Cliff Dunn.
