Liberty County COVID-19 cases increase

Reports of an uptick in COVID-19 cases across the nation have been making the news of late, and Liberty County is not immune to that trend. Recently the county surpassed the 2,000-case mark and since reports in mid-November the county has jumped from 28 active cases on Nov. 16 to 135 cases currently according to data released by the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management.

According to the report that was released Monday, Dec. 1, the county now has 2,173 total cases since information on the virus first started to be reported. There have been a total of 68 deaths attributed to the disease so far in the county.

The total percentage of county residents that have tested positive is .025% of the total population of 88,219 citizens.

The Centers for Disease Control is still enaging citizens to take precautions and beware of large crowds, socially distance when possible, and encouraging the wearing of a mask.

Texas is still under Gov. Greg Abbott’s mask order, which went into effect July 3. There is a possible exemption for counties that have 20 or fewer active COVID-19 cases, there are only 28 Texas counties that have been approved for this exemption, Liberty County is not one of them.
