Leo Wilson takes oath as the 89th Legislative Session begins
AUSTIN— Last week, Texas House District 23 Rep. Terri Leo Wilson swore an oath to uphold the values written in the US and Texas Constitution to mark the beginning of the 89th Legislative Session.
“Our district sent me to Austin to fight for our values and I am ready to get to work,” Leo Wilson said. “The legislative process has begun and I am committed to delivering results that reflect the will of the people of Galveston and Chambers counties.”
Leo Wilson was sworn in on the House Floor at her new desk, Desk 85, and was joined by husband David Wilson, Chief of Staff Saul Mendoza, Chambers County District Director Susan LeBlanc, guest Scott Bowen and guest Rachal Hisler. Gaylyn DeVine and Linda Burton were in the House Gallery to show support.
Leo Wilson took inspiration from Philippians 2:3, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”
Leo Wilson has 40 years of experience in education, activism and elected office. She entered her second term as a state representative.
Following the Opening Ceremony, guests left for representatives to begin the session, starting by voting for the Speaker of the House. Leo Wilson voted for Rep. David Cook, the House Republican Caucus nominee, to honor her commitment to the caucus, according to a press release.
Rep. Dustin Burrows was elected as Speaker of the House following two rounds of voting.
“Leo Wilson emphasized the importance of unity moving forward and expressed her commitment to working with Speaker Burrows to pass the conservative legislation her constituents elected her to champion,” according to the press release.
The House adjourned on Thursday, Jan. 16 and will reconvene on Wednesday, Jan. 22 to discuss rules and regulations.
Leo Wilson can be reached at her office at the Texas Capitol in room E2.810 or by phone at 512-463-0502.
