Coates double-double leads Anahuac past Warren 46-42
ANAHUAC – Brad Coates scored 18 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to lead the Anahuac Panthers to a 46-42 win over the Warren Warriors last Tuesday night in district play.
The game started slow, as both teams combined for just eight points in the opening quarter.
Coates grabbed an offensive rebound and scored for a 2-0 lead. Just before the end of the first quarter, it was Coates again hitting the offensive boards and scoring while he was fouled and the game was tied at 4-apiece heading into the second quarter.
Coates tied the game at 8-8 by scoring on the inside, and then Christian Hernandez connected from downtown and the Panthers led 11-8.
The game was tied at 21 at the half.
Early in the third quarter, Anahuac’s Richard Smith grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it 23-21.
Smith followed that up by hitting a three-pointer and Anahuac led 26-21.
Hernandez then came up with a steal and scored and the Panthers enjoyed their biggest lead of the night at 30-23.
Warren cut the deficit to 37-35 in the fourth quarter with a 12-7 run.
Smith ended the run with a steal and score and the advantage was back to 39-35.
Smith capped off his big second half with a drive and score to make it 43-37.
Leading 43-39 with 27 seconds remaining, Hernandez hit a couple of free throws to ice the game.
Anahuac will have another massive game at home on Friday as they host the East Chambers Buccaneers.
