Manhunt leads to stir at schools

An early morning shooting incident created quite a stir, as several school districts were forced to lockdown their campuses for a short time last Thursday morning.

The incident took place in an area between Raywood and Daisetta when a man, identified as John Johnson, 37, from Raywood, apparently fired a gun at a residence on CR 193.

No one was shot, but the suspect’s mother and stepfather were transported to the hospital with possible minor injuries associated with flying glass.

Johnson fled the scene, and a manhunt ensued, leading to the authorities asking schools to take precautions.

According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Capt. David Meyers, out of an abundance of caution, said that schools were put on alert while they tried to locate the suspect, who fled in a Toyota Camry.

Campuses in Hardin, Hull-Daisetta, Devers and Liberty ISDs were impacted at the time as law enforcement located the suspect.

Johnson was located in Hardin County, and after a short pursuit by law enforcement, he wrecked his vehicle and was taken into custody around Batson.

He was expected to be charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
