Tarkington sweeps past East Bernard in Bi-district

The Tarkington Longhorns racked up 13 hits and swept past East Bernard in Bi-district play on Saturday afternoon at Grand Oaks high school in a Class 3A match-up with a 9-3 win to move on to the second round of the playoffs.

After winning a wild game one on Friday night 7-5, Tarkington was in control of this one the entire way.

Dennis Hollingsworth finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Ian Herndon added two hits and a pair of RBIs.

The Brahmas moved in front first with a run in the top of the first inning.

Then the Longhorns went to work in their first at-bat of the day.

Drendahl Kanada reached after being hit-by-a-pitch, and then Trace Shirley singled up the middle, and on an error by the second baseman on the throw to third, Kanada scored to tie the game at 1-apiece.

Bryan Mills followed by reaching on an error, and then Robby Bridwell was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases.

Herndon then gave Tarkington the lead for good with a single to score Shirley to make it 2-1.

The Longhorns stretched their lead out in the third when Clayton Primeaux doubled to start things off and then scored on a Bridwell double to up the lead to 3-1.

Herndon followed with a triple to the gap, and after Bridwell scored, the advantage was 4-1. Lance Hawthorne then got into the act by scoring Bridwell with a single, and Tarkington was ahead 5-1.

Hollingsworth made the score 6-1 with a single, and the Longhorns were on their way.

Tarkington put the game away with three more runs in the fifth.

Hunter Keith had an RBI single to score Hawthorne, followed by a Hollingsworth double to make it 8-1.

Stephen Pavlat put the final touches on the scoring with a double to plate Hollingsworth for a 9-1 lead.

Hawthorne pitched three innings in getting the win on the mound.

Mills pitched the final four innings for the Longhorns.

Keith and Primeaux each added two hits.

Tarkington will now face Woodville in the Area Championship this week.
