Dayton police officer delivers baby in pickup truck

It was just another morning on patrol for Dayton Police Officer David Meyers — until he delivered a baby in the front seat of a pickup truck.
On Thursday, Oct. 24, Meyers, along with Officers Jasmine Fontenot and Juan Gonzalez, responded to a call for service in reference to a female on Orchis Rd., who was in labor with contractions that were 2 minutes apart.

Arriving at the scene, they found Kelly Major sitting inside of a pickup truck. With contractions at less than a minute apart, it became apparent that the baby was not going to wait, so Officer Meyers stepped in and helped Major with the delivery of her baby boy. 

“With contractions so close, we knew the baby was going to come before EMS arrived, so I just had to help,” Meyers said.

The officers cleared the back seat to allow the front seat to recline and Meyer stepped in to assist. Officers Fontenot and Gonzalez came alongside to encourage and coach Major with breathing.

“The baby came out and I caught him,” said Meyers. “He started to cry right away, so we knew he was ok.”

This was a first for Meyers, not being trained in the finer skills of midwifery, but his training in keeping calm during stressful situations helped. The new baby boy was placed on the mother's stomach awaiting the arrival of EMS, who arrived about 3-5 minutes after the baby was delivered.
