DAYTON – It was a day of celebration for area Catholics as they took part in activities honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Virgin Mary, who appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill on his way to mass in 1531 in Mexico.

Catholics in the area partook in their annual pilgrimage from St. Anne’s Catholic Church towards St. Joseph’s Catholic Church after holding early morning festivities such as breakfeast, praying the rosary, and opening the morning with Mariachi.

After arriving at St. Joseph’s in the afternoon, participants were served lunch, including pozole, pizza, elote, and other refreshments.

Traditional Aztec, indigenous, folk, and horse dancing groups provided entertainment for the afternoon, and mass was held after.

The religious event is celebrated yearly on Dec. 12, with festivals, mass, and other traditions.
