ANAHUAC— For the third year, Anahuac Municipal Development District is organizing its Summer Job Training Program, an opportunity for local students to discover potential careers.

The program is designed to help teenagers develop skills that will better their chances of obtaining a job following graduation.

“The purpose of the AMDD summer job training program is to help participants gain skills and training that is relevant to real world jobs/experiences,” AMDD Director Monica Rodriguez said. “We pay the salaries of the participants and only partner with local Anahuac businesses. It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN!”

Anahuac High School Counselor BJ Garcia and Rodriguez, also a teacher with Barbers Hill ISD, match students to participating businesses.

“We aim to pair students with businesses that can train them in areas that align with their future career goals,” Rodriguez said. “We have had two participants return for a second year, and two participants were hired by the business even after the program was over.”

Applicants undergo an interview process of submitting resumes and interviewing at the AMDD office. Rodriguez, AMDD Office Manager Annette Abernathy and Director Kenneth “Kenny” Miller conduct the interviews.

“What we’re trying to do is to give them an opportunity to get into the workforce,” Abernathy said.

Last year’s participating businesses include Anahuac National Bank, city of Anahuac, Chambers-Liberty County Navigation District, The Bronzed Penny/Mane Street Hair Salon, Law Office of Lucas Wilson, Little Busy Bee’s Preschool, Anahuac Cleaners and Four Corner Tire and Oil.

“The kids are really interested,” Abernathy said. “I’m already getting calls.”

If selected, participants will be invited to attend a celebration at the end of the program.

Applicants must be 16 or older and available to work full-time or part-time from June 2 to July 25.  Applicants must submit resumes to Abernathy at aabernathy@anahuacmdd.org.

For questions, contact Abernathy at 409-267-1101.
