Read moreThe Dayton Rotary Club had the opportunity to learn more about April’s Child Abuse month as Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center staff attended their meeting. Rotary President Rachel Ansley introduced Alyssa Thomas to the club. Thomas did the presentation and gave some sobering statistics. “About 62% of the children who are victims delay or never disclose child sexual abuse to friends, family, and/or authorities. Sadly, 90% of sexual abuse victims know their abuser. Experts estimate that 1 in 10 children are sexually abused before their 18th birthday,” stated Ms. Thomas. Bridgehaven offers many services, is a community outreach, and provides training to increase awareness along with hoping to prevent child abuse and neglect. Other services that are offered include joint investigation with law enforcement (and other agencies), forensic interview, family advocacy and victim support, trauma-focused therapy, medical evaluations and multi-disciplinary case review. Alyssa Thomas stated, “We love to keep our children safe. Therefore, we offer free presentations and training with such topics as child abuse& prevention, child personal safety, teen dating violence, internet safety, preventing child mortality and bullying.” The Dayton Bridgehaven group works with not only Liberty County and Chambers County but also assists other counties. Last year, they conducted 286 forensic interviews- 59.8% were from Liberty County, 29% from Chambers County and 11.2% as courtesy interviews for other counties. The services provided by Bridehaven are offered free of charge to residents of Chambers and Liberty counties through public and private donations and grants.

Last school year she wanted to do a little something extra with the 5th grader students at Richter Elementary. Since she has always wanted to write and illustrate a book with her class, she figured this would be a great opportunity for both she and the students to create a book in Art. Out of all the 5th graders, she actually had thirty- five students sign up. Together they wrote and illustrated a book titled ABC’s of Art. After seeing how successful this was, Ms. Burress made it her mission to make this an annual project with the 5th graders at Richter elementary.

Read moreRotarian Dr. Luke Chachere introduced Pastor Guy Williams, of Dayton First Methodist Church who gave an informative program over the tour of the Holy Land. He is organizing a group that will be traveling to the Holy Land next February (2024). The tour will visit major sites, stay in 4-star hotels, enjoy included buffet breakfasts and dinners with knowledgeable guides while traveling in a deluxe motor coach. Williams discussed with the club various places that the group will be traveling and pointed out on a map the various locations they will see. In his presentation, he highlighted Capernaum, which was the base of Jesus’ Galilean ministry, hometown of Peter and other disciples. Capernaum was also the location of biblical teachings, healings, and other miracles. Another interesting location where the group will tour is around the Sea of Tiberius/Galilee, which houses a museum with an ancient Galilee fishing boat that was discovered in 1986 which dates back to the First Century AD. Other highlights of his presentation included: a picture and map of Caesarea Maritima- the imprisonment and trial site of the disciple Paul, the Garden Tomb, the Upper Room Site, the Mount of Olives, Nazareth and the Qumran/Dead Sea Scrolls.
