What The Bible Says

QUESTION – What is the Truth?

In John 18: 37- 38 – Jesus tells the Roman governor Pilate “ I have come into the world to bear witness of the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My words.” Pilate responds with scorn- “what is the truth?” This question is an ancient one as we can see. We live in a society not unlike the Roman world on the issue of truth today. You hear many people use terms today like, “ this is my truth”, or “ what is your truth?” These statements illuminate the idea that truth is relative and not absolute. Pilate and many today have bought into the post-modernism error that there is no such thing as absolute truth in religion. Jesus said “you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” In John 17: 17 Jesus says “Sanctify them in your truth, Thy word is truth” In Psalm 119: 160 – the psalmist says, “ the entirety of Thy word is truth and every one of your righteous rules endures” God is called the God of truth in Isaiah 65:16.

The Word of God is the one source which we can completely rely on. It is the one reliable foundation for our understanding of everything. His truth is 1. Consistent 2. Exclusive 3. Universal 4. Objective 5. Constructive and 6. Absolute.

In a world that is confused, let us go back to the Bible to settle our issues of “what is truth.” The truth on religious matters can be known and we can all walk in unity in religious matters if we will rely on God’s word as our standard and not on whatever men consider “their truth”. Jeremiah 10:23- “It is not in man to direct his own steps.” John 14: 6 – Jesus says “ I am The Way, The Truth and The Life, no man comes to the Father but by me.”
